Rowing club software: a neutral overview

Which platforms exist, what each one does, and which fits which type of club. Written by the Row HQ team, covering every relevant product fairly.

What software do Canadian rowing clubs use?

The market for rowing club management software remains niche but is growing as clubs move away from spreadsheets and GroupMe threads. The options used by Canadian clubs and programs include Checklick, Row HQ, iCrew, Boathouse Connect, ROWter, FitClub, Hello Club, SportEasy, FriendlyManager, and ClubLogic. This page covers what each one does, how they are priced, and which club contexts they suit best. It is written by the Row HQ team, but we have tried to represent the whole category honestly - including where competitors have capabilities we do not yet offer.

How to choose

The right software depends on the type of club, your provincial association requirements, and what your committee most needs to get off spreadsheets first.

Canadian community rowing club (30-200 members)

Needs boat booking, RCA and provincial affiliation tracking, training session scheduling, and CASL-compliant communications. Volunteer-run with limited technical support.

Likely best fit: Checklick has the broadest established Canadian community sports base. Row HQ offers dedicated CA localisation with RCA tracking and is free for clubs of up to 20 active members for comparison.

OUA or U SPORTS university rowing program

Needs varsity squad management, Royal Canadian Henley preparation, athlete roster management, and CSSRA eligibility tracking.

Likely best fit: Boathouse Connect handles North American university programs. Row HQ includes university-level features with Canadian-specific localisation and is free for clubs of up to 20 members.

UK community rowing club

Needs boat booking, British Rowing affiliation tracking, session scheduling, and a volunteer-friendly AGM handover process.

Likely best fit: iCrew has the largest established UK base. Row HQ is a newer alternative, free for clubs of up to 20 active members.

Australian rowing club

Needs Rowing Australia affiliation tracking, state regatta prep, GPS school programme management, and community-club billing.

Likely best fit: Hello Club has strong AU adoption. Row HQ has AU-localised features and is free for clubs of up to 20 members.

What to look for in rowing club software

Beyond features, five practical factors determine whether software actually gets adopted by a volunteer-run committee.

Member adoption
If members have to install from the App Store, a meaningful proportion will not bother. Browser-based and progressive web apps tend to get higher adoption from casual and masters members.
Committee handover at the AGM
Canadian rowing clubs turn over committee roles every AGM. Software that requires technical setup loses half its value if the outgoing secretary is the only one who knows how it works.
RCA and provincial reporting
If your club submits membership returns to Rowing Canada Aviron or a provincial association like Rowing Ontario or Rowing BC, confirm the software produces the required export formats before committing.
Trial length
A two-week trial does not cover a full Royal Canadian Henley build or subs renewal cycle. Aim for at least three months.
Pricing in CAD
Per-member pricing grows with club size. Flat-rate tiers are easier to budget. Confirm pricing is quoted in Canadian dollars and whether trials require a credit card.
Rowing-specific features
General sports software handles sessions and payments. Rowing clubs also need crew selection from live availability, boat booking with conflict prevention, and water-safety qualification tracking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best rowing club management software in Canada?
Checklick has the broadest established Canadian sports club user base. Row HQ is a rowing-specific alternative with dedicated Canadian localisation, RCA affiliation tracking, and a free tier for clubs of up to 20 active members. The table above summarises the key differences. Testing two options before committing is sensible.
What does rowing club software do?
Rowing club management software handles the operational jobs that volunteer committees spend disproportionate time on: membership records, boat booking and fleet management, training session scheduling, crew selection, Royal Canadian Henley or provincial regatta prep, dues collection, and CASL-compliant communications. The best platforms bring those into a single system so coaches, members, and the committee all work from the same data.
How much does rowing club software cost in Canada?
Pricing varies. Per-member models typically run from around C$1-4 per member per month. Row HQ is free for clubs of up to 20 active members, then moves to flat monthly bands by member count (from C$27 per month). Most platforms do not publish pricing publicly. Row HQ publishes its full band pricing on its pricing page.
Is there free rowing club software?
SportEasy has a freemium tier for small teams, but it is a general sports platform rather than rowing-specific. Row HQ is free forever for rowing clubs of up to 20 active members - the full product, no card required - and moves to fair monthly bands by member count above that. Beyond Row HQ, there is no fully-featured free option built specifically for rowing clubs.
Does any rowing club software integrate with Rowing Canada Aviron?
Row HQ tracks RCA membership numbers and renewal dates per member and flags lapses before regatta entries. Direct API integration with RCA's registration system is on the roadmap. Checklick does not have rowing-federation-specific integration but handles Canadian club membership broadly.

Why we built Row HQ

We built Row HQ because we could not find software that handled all the things a rowing club actually needs in one platform - boat booking with live conflict prevention, RCA affiliation tracking, junior welfare workflows including parental consent, crew selection from real availability data, and a member portal that did not require an App Store install. Existing options either did one job well, or were general sports software requiring too much adaptation. Row HQ launched Canadian-specific features in 2026 because we believe the market deserves a purpose-built option, not a general club tool with rowing terminology swapped in.
