About this club
Halifax Rowing Club is a volunteer-run non-profit based at St Mary's Boat Club on Halifax's Northwest Arm. Its published season runs from May to October, with rowing based from the lower level of the boathouse at 1641 Fairfield Road.
The club's account of local rowing reaches back to races held in Halifax Harbour and on the Northwest Arm in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It does not give a firm founding date for the present organisation.
Beginners can enter through learn-to-row, while the programme also lists adult development, recreational and competitive groups. Junior opportunities and coaching by qualified instructors are offered, and membership includes use of club equipment, coaching and training plans.
Competitive members race in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, as well as in the north-eastern United States. Row Nova Scotia also identifies Halifax as one of the province's clubs offering para rowing.
Halifax runs the Cogswell Medal Harbour Championship and the Northwest Arm Regatta. These events connect the club's current programme to the harbour and arm racing traditions described in its own history.
Members register through Rowing Canada Aviron and Row Nova Scotia in addition to paying club fees. The club states that it serves beginner, intermediate and advanced rowers rather than requiring previous experience.
