About this club
Regina Rowing Club rows on Wascana Lake from the Bob Ellard Boathouse at 3000 Wascana Drive. The club welcomes youth and adults, from beginners to competitive rowers, and offers recreational, learn-to-row and experienced programmes.
Its origins reach back to the Regina Boat Club, founded on 15 June 1907 as a private boating and yachting club. A boathouse opened on Wascana Lake in 1910, and the club held its first Dominion Day Regatta that year. Women’s rowing began in 1924.
In 1938, Harry Duckett, Jack Peart, Newt Hughes and Dick Priest won junior and senior coxless fours at the Royal Canadian Henley and were selected as Canada’s four for the 1940 Olympic Games, which were cancelled. The original organisation disbanded in 1964 after difficulties with the lake.
Duckett, Al Kerr and Peart revived it as Regina Rowing Club in 1974 before the 1975 Western Canada Summer Games. The club hosted the Western Canada Sprints in 1978, the NWIRA Regatta in 1980, the rowing venue for the 2005 Canada Summer Games and the 2007 NWIRA Championships.
Current programmes range from recreational to competitive rowing. Novices must complete the club’s skills assessment before advancing, and the club requires a safety or coaching launch to be on the water when crews go out.
