About this club
Weyburn Rowing Club is a new Saskatchewan club that rows at Nickle Lake Regional Park near Weyburn. Saskatchewan Rowing says the club shares facilities with Weyburn Canoe and Kayak Club and is intended for people who want to row for enjoyment or competition.
In January 2025, local reporting described founder Sheila Leach as working to bring a rowing club to Weyburn, initially through ergometer training and proposed Learn to Row activity at Nickle Lake. By May, the named club had launched a twice-weekly indoor programme. A June 2026 Leader-Post profile reported six registered members and identified Leach as founder and president.
The provincial club page offers Learn to Row from age 12, with no previous experience required. Its published course comprises six two-hour sessions covering rowing basics and technique in crew boats and beginner single shells, after which participants can become club members.
The club held a Learn to Row session and a Beach Sprints competition at Nickle Lake in August 2025, supported by representatives from Saskatchewan Rowing and clubs in Regina, Saskatoon and Yorkton. Leach told DiscoverWeyburn that the club provides boats and oars, removing the need for participants to buy their own.
Rowing Canada included Weyburn Rowing Club in its 2026 National Come Try Rowing Day, with Nickle Lake Main Beach as the event location. The national membership system also lists introductory adult and youth programmes under the Weyburn organisation.
The club is building towards a host team for the 2028 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Weyburn. The Leader-Post reported that Leach initially borrowed boats from five Saskatchewan clubs, arranged Learn to Row days, sought sponsors and introduced rowing in a local school, with Sarah Sweet serving as coach.
