What is Feathering?
Feathering is the 90-degree wrist roll that turns the blade parallel to the water during the recovery, then back to perpendicular before the next catch. The rotation cuts wind resistance, clears the blade above chop, and is universal across competitive Canadian rowing.
What feathering actually is
Feathering is the rotation of the oar around its long axis between strokes. During the drive, when the blade is in the water and producing force, the blade is held square - perpendicular to the water surface - presenting maximum surface area against the water. During the recovery, when the blade is above the water on the slide forward, the blade is feathered parallel to the surface, presenting minimum surface area against the wind. Squaring back to perpendicular happens around halfway up the recovery so the rower arrives at the catch ready to drop the blade straight in.
The term comes from the broader world of oared boats and naval rowing, where feathering an oar to cut wind resistance has been standard for centuries. In Canadian competitive rowing today, the feather is universal across both sweep and sculling, although square-blade rowing is used heavily as a technique drill in NCCP coach education and in warm-ups across Canadian clubs.
The mechanics of the feather
Feathering is done at the wrist. The feathering hand - the inside hand in sweep, both hands in sculling - rolls the wrist through 90 degrees to rotate the handle. The motion is a quarter turn, not a full rotation. The fingers stay relatively relaxed on the handle; the wrist does the work and the fingers ride along.
Some Canadian coaches teach a finger-roll variant in sculling, where the oar rolls along the fingers while the wrist stays flat. The finger-roll produces a slightly cleaner blade rotation and is more popular in sculling than in sweep. The trade-off is that finger-roll is harder for beginners to learn cleanly and is less consistent at high stroke rates. The standard approach across most Canadian club programs is wrist-roll first for learn-to-row and junior squads, with finger-roll layered in for sculling specialists later.
Timing the feather and the square
The feather happens immediately after extraction at the release. The order is tap-down (lift the blade vertically clear of the water), then feather (wrist roll to rotate the blade parallel), then hands-away (arms extend forward). The blade should be fully feathered by the time the hands leave the body, never before they leave.
Squaring - rotating the blade back to perpendicular for the next entry - happens around the body-over position on the recovery slide, well before the front stop. Squaring early gives the rower more time to set up the catch position and place the blade cleanly. Squaring late leaves the blade arriving at the catch at an angle, and the entry splashes across the surface rather than dropping in vertically.

Common feathering faults
Feathering errors are among the most frequent technique faults at the Canadian club level:
- Early feathering at the release: the wrist rolls while the blade is still in the water. The blade slices sideways through the water and digs in - the single most common cause of crabs at every Canadian club.
- Late squaring at the catch: the blade is still partly feathered when the rower arrives at the front stop. The blade enters the water at an angle and splashes rather than dropping in cleanly. Boat speed bleeds away on every stroke.
- Inconsistent feather angle: the rower over-feathers (rolls past parallel) or under-feathers (does not reach parallel), so the blade catches the wind unevenly. Fixed by repetition, coach feedback and consistent grip pressure.
- Tense grip on the handle: tight fingers fight the wrist roll and slow the feathering action. Canadian coaches emphasise relaxed fingers in cold-weather sessions especially, because grip stiffens in low temperatures along the Welland Canal in March.
Why Canadian beginners learn square-blade first
Most learn-to-row programs across Canada start beginners on square-blade rowing for the first few weeks before introducing the feather. Square-blade is harder to balance - the wind catches the blade - but easier to coordinate because the brain has one less moving part to manage. Once the basic stroke shape sits in muscle memory, feathering is layered on top. Beginners who learn feathering and the rest of the stroke simultaneously often pick up timing errors at the release that take years to undo.
