About this club
Aviron Lachine Rowing is a not-for-profit club based at 2801 Boulevard Saint-Joseph in Lachine. It rows on Lac Saint-Louis and describes itself as the only Quebec club operating on that water.
The Club d'aviron de Lachine was founded in 1863 by Canadian, British and Scottish engineers working on the Lachine railway bridge. Its early regattas included an 1868 meeting attended by Saint John's Paris Crew. The original club closed in 1962; a new Lachine rowing club opened in 1997.
The club marked the 150th anniversary of its foundation in 2013. A history project led by former vice-president Richard Cabana gathered records and interviews with former rowers to preserve the club's story.
Programmes run throughout the year for people aged ten and over. They include summer day camps for ages 10 to 15, adult initiation, recreational rowing, junior and under-23 competition, masters rowing and high-performance training.
The fleet ranges from lightweight singles to sweep eights and includes coastal-rowing boats and Alden shells used for learning. Competitive athletes can also use ergometers, free weights and exercise balls, while recreational members may row singles, doubles, quads, fours and eights.
Aviron Lachine runs the annual Défi du Canal de Lachine each May. The five-kilometre head race is open to singles, doubles, quads, fours and eights, and the club publishes results covering editions from 2017 through 2025.
