About this club
Club d’aviron de Laval rows from Berge des Cageux at 3676 Boulevard Lévesque West in Chomedey. Its official site says members have 12 navigable kilometres on the Rivière des Prairies and offers rowing for first-timers, fitness, recreation and competition.
The club began in 1956 when Albert Conrad led a group of German founders at his riverside home under the name Montreal Rowing Club. It incorporated as Chomedey Rowing Club in 1962 and adopted the current Club d’aviron de Laval name in 1975.
It won the Eastern Rowing Association's Comstock Trophy in 1963 and 1965, then again in 1988 and 1989. Five club athletes competed at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, a milestone recorded in the club's own referenced chronology.
The club moved to its present site near Pont Lachapelle in the late 1960s. Volunteers built boat storage and a clubhouse there; after a 1972 fire destroyed the facilities and equipment, volunteers rebuilt the club. A second boat shed and later renovations expanded the base.
Current provision spans learn-to-row, novice, recreational, sport and performance pathways, including junior and masters participation. The novice programme develops both sculling and sweep skills, usually in four-person crews led by an experienced boat captain.
Laval organised La Descente des Cageux in 2011 and 2012. In 2023 it launched the Laval 500 under the Coupe Québec Aviron series, continuing the club's role as both a training organisation and a regatta host.
