About this club
McGill University Rowing Club is the university's men's and women's rowing programme in Montreal. It trains at the Olympic Basin in Parc Jean-Drapeau and competes in Ontario university and Canadian university championships.
The club's founding meeting took place in December 1925, and McGill won its first recorded race against Toronto in 1926. Activity stopped in 1939 and returned in 1976 after the Olympic Basin was built.
A women's programme began in 1980. McGill then helped stage the first Canadian university rowing championship in 1981, beginning a national event history that it has hosted repeatedly.
The club's centennial history reports 13 Olympians among its alumni. It also says McGill had hosted the national university championship five times before bringing the event back to the Olympic Basin for its 2025 centenary.
Current racing includes Ontario University Athletics and Canadian University Rowing Championship competition, with varsity and novice opportunities for students. The 2025 national championship drew programmes from across Canada to McGill's home course.
McGill's men marked the centenary championship with gold and silver medals and placed sixth among 28 universities. The official athletics department uses 'McGill University Rowing Club', supporting a canonical-name correction rather than treating the entry as a different organisation.
