About this club
Nelson Rowing Club is a non-profit community club at Lakeside Park on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. It offers recreational rowing for adults and juniors from its Nelson waterfront base.
Rowing activity in Nelson was loosely organised by the late 1870s, and a floating boathouse was established in 1896. The club's own history identifies that 1896 organisation as one of the city's first registered clubs.
A storm in 1939 and the Second World War contributed to a decline, and the earlier club closed in the mid-1950s. Rowing returned in the late 1960s, Nelson hosted Pan American trials in 1971, and activity again became dormant during the 1980s.
Local rower and coach Mike Preney began another revival in 1987. The present non-profit was established in 1989 and moved to Lakeside Park in 1990, linking today's club to the longer local history while documenting the modern restart.
Current programmes include adult learn-to-row, junior rowing and community sport sessions. Experienced members can continue in recreational club rowing after the introductory pathway.
The club organises the Nelson Sprints as its annual regatta. Its history and programme pages provide evidence for a continuous present identity from the 1989 non-profit, with acknowledged earlier periods of closure and revival.
