About this club
Nicomekl Rowing Club is based at Elgin Heritage Park on the Nicomekl River in South Surrey. Its published address is 13723 Crescent Road, and the club describes about 4.5 kilometres of navigable river between Crescent Beach Marina and the dam near King George Highway.
The project began when former UBC rowers Rick Fearn and Gary Cumiford met in summer 1994 and discussed the river's rowing potential. Planning developed in 1995 with support from Surrey mayor Bob Bose, the city, Delta Deas Rowing Club and the wider British Columbia rowing community.
The club hosted its first Head of the River on 30 March 1996. Two races ran upriver from Crescent Beach pier to the Elgin control dam, attracting about 200 rowers, canoeists and kayakers.
During 1996 and 1997 the club acquired a four, a double and two eights from Vancouver Rowing Club, allowing it to expand membership and start learn-to-row. Current introductory courses run in spring and summer, followed by coached rows through the year.
Nicomekl welcomes novice and experienced adults, supporting recreational rowing and the development of competitive crews. The annual Head of the Nicomekl now invites rowers from Western Canada and the United States.
The official history documents the club's formation process and first event but does not give one formal incorporation date. Founded year therefore remains null rather than choosing the 1994 meeting, 1995 planning or 1996 regatta as an unsupported legal start.
