About this club

St. Michaels University School runs a three-term rowing programme in Victoria. Its purpose-built rowing centre is on the Gorge waterway, where school crews train towards Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

The autumn team includes newcomers and races in the lower Vancouver Island high-school season, including the City Championships. A smaller winter and spring group prepares for competitive regattas across British Columbia and the national schools regatta in St. Catharines.

The school owns 23 rowing shells for sculling and sweep rowing, covering the competitive boat categories, as well as six coaching launches. Its rowing centre is supported by a dryland room with rowing and bicycle ergometers.

The coaching group includes staff with Canadian national-team, university and Olympic coaching experience. Student athletes train under a programme designed for different ability levels rather than a single selected crew.

SMUS says former rowers have continued into Canadian and United States university programmes, including NCAA teams. The programme’s current alumni list includes Liz Fenje, Mickey Aylard, Tina Yu, Sarah Hagkull, Matthew Cormie, Liam Hodgins and Firinne Rolfe.
