About this club
University of British Columbia Rowing comprises the university’s men’s and women’s varsity and novice programmes. The teams are based at the John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse on the Middle Arm of the Fraser River in Richmond.
UBC dates its first official team to 1921. The programme’s history traces its relationship with Vancouver Rowing Club, the creation of a women’s crew in the 1970s and athletes who represented Canada at major international championships.
The university says rowers associated with UBC have won more than 40 Olympic medals. Its account includes the UBC coxless four’s gold at the 1956 Olympic Games and members of the 1964 Canadian team.
The current boathouse opened on 30 September 2006 at 7277 River Road. UBC describes four boat bays and a facility shared by varsity, novice, school and community programmes.
UBC’s men and women compete in Canadian university rowing. An alumni report published in 2024 states that the women had won two national titles and the men three during the preceding five years.
The separate men’s and women’s Thunderbirds pages publish current rosters, schedules and results. Rowing BC lists University of British Columbia Rowing as a current member organisation in Richmond.
