About this club
University of Victoria Rowing Club comprises the Vikes men's and women's university rowing programmes in Victoria. The women's programme trains year-round at Elk and Beaver Lake, with its busiest on-water periods in autumn and early spring.
The university established its women's rowing programme in 1972. UVic's 50th-anniversary account traces its first season, later national championships and the athletes and coaches who moved into Canadian international rowing.
UVic's championship record lists 14 national titles for the women and seven for the men. The women's history also records athletes reaching the Olympic Games from the programme's early years onward.
A 2023 account of the men's programme described 45 athletes plus two novice eights. It also documented continuing investment in shells, oars, launches and indoor training equipment.
The club hosts the Head and Tail of the Gorge on the Gorge Narrows. Rowing BC describes the two-day event as drawing competitors from British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, with racing visible from the Tillicum Narrows Bridge.
UVic also races UBC for the Brown Cup. University records date that contest to 1992, while coach Howard Campbell helped launch the Canadian University Rowing Championships in 1997.
