About this club
Barrie Rowing Club is a non-profit community club based at the Southshore Community Centre on Kempenfelt Bay. Its official address is 205 Lakeshore Drive, Barrie, and its stated purpose is to develop rowing across Barrie and Simcoe County.
The club was founded during the winter of 1987-88 by a small group seeking a permanent rowing club in the city. Its first equipment included two shells borrowed from Cornwall Rowing Club, stored in a rented shed on Victoria Street.
After roughly five years, growing membership and boat numbers led to a partnership with the City of Barrie and local organisations. They restored a former CN maintenance building on the south shore of Kempenfelt Bay, extended its basement for boat storage and installed a floating dock at what became the Southshore Community Centre.
Current on-water choices include introductory lessons, youth rowing for ages 12 to 16, a coached club league, recreational rowing and year-round masters competition training. The club also offers indoor rowing and fitness sessions from September to May.
Barrie provides boats, equipment and training for its programmes. It has also received a Canada Sports for All grant from Rowing Canada Aviron and Sport Canada to fund participation opportunities for newcomers to Canada and Barrie.
