About this club
Argonaut Rowing Club is based at 1225 Lake Shore Boulevard West on Toronto's Western Beaches. Its Lake Ontario course is protected by a breakwater, and the club describes itself as a not-for-profit corporation registered in Ontario.
The club was organised on 21 June 1872 at Toronto's Rossin House Hotel. Its founders were the Orioles, a group of amateur oarsmen who had raced around southern Ontario during the 1860s; Henry O'Brien became founder, first president and first stroke.
Row Ontario records 67 Argonauts representing the club and Canada at the Olympic Games since 1904. They include learn-to-row graduate Marnie McBean and Paralympian Victoria Nolan, while Joe Wright Sr. amassed 130 rowing titles and Joe Wright Jr. won the Diamond Sculls.
Current programmes cover adult learn-to-row, recreational and competitive adult rowing, junior development and performance, para rowing, and the week-long Camp Argo for ages 11 to 16. Junior financial assistance is offered through the Martha Coffey Junior Development Fund.
The facilities include a club boat fleet, private boat and locker storage, a gym, erg studio, change rooms, coaching office and trophy room. A 250-foot floating dock is accessible, as are the club's indoor spaces.
Argonaut hosts two annual regattas for junior and adult novices and adult and para recreational rowers. Its published events are the Learn to Row Regatta and the Martha Coffey Frostbite Sprints, with racing held inside the Western Beaches breakwall.
