About this club
Burnstown Rowing Club is a recreational club on the Madawaska River at Burnstown Beach in McNab/Braeside. Its members range from their mid-teens to seniors, and the club reports a typical membership of about 40.
The organisation began as Ottawa Valley Rowing Club on the Bonnechere River in Renfrew in 1985. It moved to Burnstown in September 1988 and took its present name. Its Lee Narraway Boathouse is named for the founder and first president.
Burnstown is primarily a sculling club, although its fleet also includes a sweep four. Club equipment includes four doubles, six singles, recreational learning boats and training singles, alongside privately owned boats.
New members complete five coached learn-to-row sessions before full membership. They begin in recreational singles, then continue practising at their own pace and can use a buddy system before progressing to the club's more advanced sculls.
The club runs the Head of the Madawaska on the first Sunday after Labour Day. The annual head-race programme welcomes singles, doubles, fours and eights for three races on the river, and Row Ontario confirms Burnstown Rowing Club as the event host.
The beach and regatta venue are published as 1537 Highway 508. Membership provides access to the boathouse and the online boat-booking system, and all members register through Rowing Canada Aviron.
