About this club
Calgary Rowing Club operates from North Glenmore Park on the Glenmore Reservoir. The Alberta Rowing Association lists the club at 6449 Crowchild Trail SW and says it serves about 600 participants in a typical year, split between regular members and short programmes.
The club was founded in 1966, with 1967 its first full season. Its alumni history says eight founders built one boat, acquired others from Winnipeg Rowing Club and obtained oars from Regina Rowing Club.
By the 1970s, Calgary had held its first regatta and sent crews to the Royal Canadian Henley. York Langerfeld and Barb Boettcher represented the club at the 1976 Montreal Olympics; four Calgary rowers later competed at the Sydney Games in 2000.
Current member programmes cover juniors, seniors, masters and para rowers. Adult learn-to-row, youth camps and private lessons are open to non-members, while the junior programme has recreational and competitive streams and trains athletes for regattas.
The club hosts the annual Alberta Open, a two-day sanctioned sprint regatta on a buoyed six-lane course with novice, experienced and para events. It also works with the University of Calgary Rowing Club on the Dinos Sprints and Head of the Weasel weekend.
Calgary received Rowing Canada Aviron's Club Outstanding Achievement Award in 2020. The boathouse supports year-round training, with the on-water season published as May through October and indoor access continuing through winter.
