About this club
The University of Alberta Rowing Team is a student rowing organisation in Edmonton. It began in 1981 as a branch of Edmonton Rowing Club and limits membership to full-time University of Alberta students with valid university identification.
The organisation adopted the University of Alberta Rowing Team name in 2004. In 2005 it named an eight in honour of the club’s first president, Dr Jerry Leonard.
The team offers learn-to-row, novice and high-performance routes. First-year rowers race in novice categories before progressing to development or competitive squads, and the programme combines water sessions with ergometer, weights and rowing-tank work.
Its autumn calendar has included the Head of the North Saskatchewan, Prairie University Championships, Head of the Weasel, Head of the Elk, Head of the Gorge and Canadian University Rowing Championships. Novice and competitive squads travel together to many events.
Winter training runs from mid-November into April and includes indoor racing. University competition pauses in summer, when Edmonton rowing activity continues through Edmonton Rowing Club.
