About this club
Collingwood Rowing Club rows from 2 Birch Street on Collingwood Harbour in Georgian Bay. Its on-water season runs from early May to late October, with boats launched from the shore rather than a dock.
A small group of enthusiasts founded the club in 2003 to establish rowing in the harbour. It began with one old eight and a handful of members, then added a quadruple scull and two more boats within its first five years.
A youth programme developed in the early 2010s through week-long camps for local young people. A 2012 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant tied to that programme allowed the club to expand its fleet and equipment; five participants later rowed at Canadian and American universities.
Today's fleet includes coxed eights and fours, a quadruple scull, doubles, singles and double coastal touring boats. Programmes cover come-try sessions, learn-to-row, return-to-row, recreational membership, visiting rowers, coaching, training instruction and coxswain development.
Learn-to-row teaches sculling technique, equipment handling, safety, the stroke sequence, manoeuvring and landing through small-group coaching. Graduates can join the regular club sessions to continue developing technique and fitness.
Collingwood is primarily recreational, although it has run competitive programmes and retains some competitive masters. Its community activity has included Try It Days, a skills challenge, capsize-recovery sessions, a Butts in Boats fundraiser and visits between regional clubs.
