About this club
Durham Rowing Club is based at 8 Old Rail Lane in Port Perry, with its boathouse on Lake Scugog close to the town centre. Row Ontario says the lake provides about 24 kilometres of water and that the on-water season normally runs from early May to late October.
Rob Millikin, Mike Mahar, Scott Withers and John Godden founded the club in 1989 at McLaughlin Bay in Oshawa. Limited rowing water led the organisation to move to Port Perry in 1992, and members used temporary storage and daily boat transport until the boathouse opened in 1998.
The boathouse later gained two additional bays. The club offers learn-to-row, recreational and competitive programmes, with competition for juniors, under-23s and seniors and the ability to provide para rowing when needed.
A six-session learn-to-row course takes people with no previous experience through the fundamentals and into recreational or competitive membership. Recreational crews focus on technique, fitness and enjoyment, while competitive athletes train for provincial regattas and Royal Canadian Henley.
Durham has supported Ontario Tech University's rowing programme since 2006. The Ridgebacks won the programme's first two Ontario University Athletics medals in 2012, and current novice selection remains open to full-time students without rowing experience.
Club alumna Jaclyn Stelmaszyk began rowing at Durham as an Uxbridge Secondary School student, went on to Western University and represented both Canada and Poland internationally.
