About this club
Haldimand Grand River Rowing Club is a community rowing club on the Grand River at Cayuga. Row Ontario says the club operates from private riverside property where its boats and equipment are stored.
The club was founded in 2004 by local rowing enthusiasts. Its founding group included first president Greg Schmidt and Sandy Mathieson, who owned the operating property at the time.
The on-water season normally begins in mid-May, after the river's stronger spring current has eased, and continues into the autumn. The club's published registration covers adult and youth recreational rowing, with participants accepted from age 14.
Learn-to-row has been a central route into membership since the club began. The current course combines a land session with water sessions, after which participants can move into recreational rowing; Row Ontario recorded past intakes of up to 32 learners.
For about 12 years, ending in 2018, the club organised Gourmet on the Grand for its members and visitors from other Ontario clubs. The original tour format included a 10-kilometre row towards Dunnville, a meal stop and the return journey.
The membership has drawn rowers from Cayuga and surrounding communities including Caledonia, Dunnville, Hagersville, Selkirk, Simcoe, Grimsby and Hamilton. Row Ontario described it as a recreational club serving skill levels from beginners to established rowers.
