About this club
Ottawa Rowing Club is a volunteer-driven, non-profit rowing organisation on the Ottawa River at Lady Grey Drive. Founded in 1867, it describes itself as Canada’s oldest rowing club and serves members from Ottawa and Outaouais ranging from age 12 to over 70.
The club was formed in the year of Confederation. It hosted the national championship regatta in 1883, 1897 and 1901 on a course opposite Kettle Island, and a reported crowd of 10,000 watched its 1881 regatta.
One of its best-known crews was the 1910-11 men’s eight coached by Jim Ten Eyck. The crew won at the Canadian Henley in 1910, won a United States championship a week later and then raced at Henley Royal Regatta. In 1939 the club won the Eastern Rowing Association Regatta and six Canadian Henley titles; Gabby Beaudry and Ted Graves later raced at the 1948 London Olympics.
Current programmes include adult instruction, youth day camps, junior, senior, masters, recreational and adaptive rowing. Competitive squads attend regattas in Ontario, Quebec and the United States, while the recreational programme offers a less competitive route into the sport.
The club also partners with Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, providing boats for training and OUA competition. Ottawa Rowing Club runs the Head of the Rideau, described on its site as the club’s own regatta.
