About this club
Ridley Graduate Boat Club is based on Henley Island in St. Catharines at 70 Henley Island Drive. It is a current Row Ontario member and is distinct from the Ridley College school programme.
The club was founded in 1972 by Canadian Olympic rower and coach Neil Campbell. Campbell had become Ridley College’s head coach in 1967 after racing at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics, then created the graduate club for rowers continuing beyond school.
An early Ridley graduate crew stayed together for several years with some line-up changes. The resulting 1984 men’s eight qualified for the Los Angeles Olympic Games and won gold; Campbell continued to call it the Ridley Grad crew even though not every athlete was a club member.
Jack Nicholson joined Ridley’s coaching group and later served as a Canadian national-team head coach from 1981 to 1994. National-team scullers used training camps in St. Catharines, giving the club’s athletes and coaches access to national-level work.
The club’s long-running coaching base includes Nancy Storrs, who had been with the organisation for more than 40 years when Row Ontario published its club profile. Its Henley Island location places it alongside the St. Catharines rowing community and the Royal Canadian Henley course.
