About this club
South Niagara Rowing Club is based on the South Course of the former Welland Canal in Welland. The club uses a straight section of water that includes a surveyed six-lane, buoyed racecourse used for provincial and national competition.
Rowing Canada began national-team training on the decommissioned Dain City section in 1974. Local residents then formed South Niagara Rowing Club in 1976, and the new club hosted both the Canadian and British national teams before the Montreal Olympics.
The first building on site opened in 1977, a small boathouse followed in 1978, and a larger boathouse was completed in 1999. The club now offers developmental, recreational and competitive rowing for young people and adults.
South Niagara hosted the Regatta of the Americas in 1999 as part of the World Rowing Festival. The event brought junior and masters competitors from Canada and countries including the United States, Mexico, Australia, England and Hong Kong.
The club runs two established Ontario events: the South Niagara Invitational and the Head of the Welland Five Bridges Classic. Its course has also staged the National Rowing Championships and Ontario Rowing Championships.
