About this club
St. Catharines Rowing Club is based on Henley Island at the Royal Canadian Henley course in Port Dalhousie. It provides spring, summer and autumn rowing for people aged ten and over.
The club was founded on 2 April 1903 as St. Catharines Rowing and Canoe Club after the Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen selected the old Welland Canal as a permanent championship site. The first Canadian Henley held there drew an estimated 10,000 spectators on its final day.
Read’s Island was purchased and renamed Henley Island in 1955. The club’s current main boathouse was built in 1966, and a secondary boathouse and workshop followed in 1986; that second facility is shared with Brock University and Ridley College.
Its athlete pathway begins with youth rowing school and progresses through high-school and club rowing to adult masters. Current programmes also include junior, senior, youth camp and junior-development routes, with athletes able to pursue national and international competition.
The St. Catharines Recreational Rowing League has operated since 1989 and offers adult crews two annual sessions on the Henley course. The wider club shares Henley Island and its rowing facilities with Brock, Ridley, local schools and the Canadian Henley organisation.
