About this club

Sudbury Rowing Club rows on Ramsey Lake from the Northern Water Sports Centre at 206 Ramsey Lake Road. The shared watersports facility opened in 2016 after work by the rowing club, canoe club and city.

Sculling races were held on Ramsey Lake during Dominion Day regattas in the early 1900s, but the present club was formally established in 1990 by local rowing enthusiasts. Its first fleet was stored in a fenced area provided by the city.

Current beginner routes cover equipment handling, basic technique and on-water safety before rowers progress through coached learn-to-row levels. Separate adaptive, recreational and return-to-row programmes run from mid-May into October when conditions allow.

The club revived the Silver Cup Regatta in 2023 to mark 120 years since the original trophy was awarded to Ramsey Lake’s leading sculler. A second club regatta followed in 2024, and Sudbury also hosts an annual public open house with the canoe club.

Sudbury hosted the FISA World Rowing Tour in 2012. Athletes developed through the club include Olympian Carling Zeeman and Paralympian Dr Steve Daniel.
