About this club
Vancouver Rowing Club is based at 450 Stanley Park Drive, close to the Georgia Street entrance to Stanley Park. Its rowing section trains on Coal Harbour, where the club runs learn-to-row classes and rowing programmes from its Stanley Park home.
The club traces its origin to the Vancouver Boating Club, formed in 1886. The Burrard Inlet Rowing Club opened nearby in 1890, and the two rivals amalgamated as Vancouver Rowing Club on 1 April 1899. The present Stanley Park building officially opened on 9 September 1911.
The rowing section says it has about 200 members and a fleet of shells. Its coaching pathway runs from Learn to Row through novice rowing, while a recreational programme lets members develop without racing. The recreational offer includes both sweep rowing and sculling for graduates of the first two learn-to-row levels.
Adult Level 1 introduces sweep rowing in an eight, while Level 2 introduces sculling in a quad. The club also offers para-rowing lessons, one-week junior summer camps, and junior development, intermediate and competitive programmes for rowers aged 12 to under 19.
VRC's official history records athletes in Canadian Olympic, Pan American and Commonwealth Games teams. Its listed Olympic results include silver in the coxless four at Paris 1924, bronze in the double sculls at Los Angeles 1932, gold in the coxless four and silver in the eight at Melbourne 1956, silver in the eight at Rome 1960, and gold in the coxless pair at Tokyo 1964.
Rowing BC continues to list VRC as a member organisation and has used the club as the site of a Come Try Rowing day. The club's own history also records a tradition of Coal Harbour regattas before the 1899 amalgamation.
