About this club
Hanlan Boat Club rows from Regatta Road in Toronto's Outer Harbour. It supports flat-water and coastal rowing, with current programmes for juniors, under-23 and senior athletes, masters, recreational members and competitive crews.
The club was founded in 1975 when Sam Craig secured the present site for Upper Canada College's programme. A first storage hut followed in 1976, and the club later took its name from Lake Ontario sculler Edward 'Ned' Hanlan.
Masters rowing drove substantial growth in the late 1980s. Havergal joined Hanlan in 1989, a formal executive had been established in 1987, and membership passed 200 in the early 1990s; a full summer racing programme was operating by the middle of that decade.
Learn-to-row introduces both sweep rowing and sculling before participants progress into club programmes. Row Ontario also records summer youth camps and recreational opportunities alongside the junior, senior and masters pathways.
Hanlan masters doubles won gold at both the Royal Canadian Henley and Canadian Masters Championships in 2003. The club received Row Ontario's Ken Lane Special Recognition Award in 2014, while coastal athlete Anthony Ciaccia earned silver at Canadian beach sprint trials.
The club has hosted coastal regattas and supported Ontario Adventure Rowing tours. Since 1976, its youth rowers have represented Hanlan or their schools at the CSSRA Championships, Royal Canadian Henley and higher-level championships.
