About this club

Nereid Boat Club is a real rowing club in Rutherford, New Jersey, not the United Kingdom. It rows on the tidal Passaic River in Bergen County, about 12 miles from New York City, and serves rowers from New Jersey, New York and farther afield.

Nereid was incorporated in Newark in 1868. It later occupied several Passaic River sites, but a 1962 arson fire destroyed its premises and activity nearly ceased.

In the early 1990s, Erik King and other supporters used the surviving incorporation papers to revive the organisation. They took over a former boatyard in Rutherford, renovated the building and reopened the club in 1994.

A 2012 project replaced a failing bulkhead with a sloped, planted riverbank and added a public park, canoe and kayak launch, docks, parking and stormwater improvements. New Jersey's environment commissioner opened the completed facilities on 22 May 2012.

The club offers junior and adult competitive, novice, recreational and learn-to-row programmes, along with private lessons. Its 2025 results list ten boats in the top 15 at the United States national championships and podium finishes at Head of the Charles.

Nereid is a United States 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission includes rowing, Passaic River environmental improvement and community engagement. Its physical address is 350 Riverside Avenue, Rutherford, New Jersey 07070.
